When looking into replacement windows, you have to consider how efficient they are. A good window will save on your utility budget, keeping the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But what if your windows didn’t just save energy, but created it? Hopefully it will be available before too long with a new technology breakthrough.
Southern California is no stranger to solar energy, but not everybody is jazzed about putting the big black panels up to generate electricity. Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Milano-Bicocca have created a transparent solar window. They embedded quantum dots (Nano crystals made of semiconducting materials already used in solar panel systems to capture energy) into a transparent polymer. And because solar cells don’t absorb all the light that hits them, light still comes through the window.
What this means is sometime in the not too distant future, you can have solar replacement windows. You’ll still be able to enjoy the beautiful California view, but these quantum dots in the windows will absorb solar energy and translate it into electricity without having to deal with large, ugly solar panels on your roof.
